“This ain’t love…” bellows Adam Platek, known professionally as MISSING PET, in the final seconds of the opening song. It’s a deep vocal pounding that’s both chilling and beautiful. But that’s the nature of his new EP, PITCH DARKNESS, on which he clutches lyrics to his bare chest until they cut into his flesh. “I’m fucking displaced,” he confides in “Living on Fumes,” a grinding, dark-pop track that slithers into the ear canal. “We can get our dream, guillotine from the yard sale,” he later asserts. Platek’s knack for disturbing imagery propels him across three additional tracks that feel like staring into the darkness behind your house and witnessing a shape form. Is it a hallucination or is it really coming for you?
“Plastik Love” throbs at the center of the EP, like a black widow heaving its one last breath. “There’s no need to panic,” he reassures the listener, before heading further into the swirling depths of his subconscious. Later, in “Side Piece,” he whines into a rhythmic soundscape, excavating the project title, “I’m reaching for my baby, but it’s pitch darkness.”
Platek surprises with the closer, “I Want More,” a shiny, yet still discordant, anthem about consumption of metaphorical and literal matter. His voice leans against the glistening, hypnotic backdrop that remains still eerily and prophetically important. PITCH DARKNESS emerges as a relic to the blackest parts of the human experience in excruciating and grisly detail. It’s certainly one helluva experience.
