Whether you seek guidance in the Good Word or in teachings of such philosophers and free thinkers as Plato, we are all trying to get by as best we can. What we learn, we take and grind into our every day lives as a way to cope or evolve or a little bit of both. Smokey Americana duo Smooth Hound Smith examine that search for truth with their new song, a slow-rolling campfire tune called “Waiting for a Spark.” Tripping along a brushy path of guitar and hoofed percussion, the husband-wife pair watch their former selves navigate a dream state, as the world seems intangible and slips from their fingertips. “These eyes of mine, I thought clear and bright / But they never held a shadow,” sings Caitlin Doyle-Smith, whose own uncertainty clings to her tongue. Zack Smith’s voice comes up to meets hers underneath a crescent-shaped moon, hanging low and long. The journey looms ahead, and they lock arms and power through the darkness with infectious determination.

“Waiting for a Spark” samples the duo’s new album, Dog in a Manger, out everywhere August 9.
