Debut singles serve a very crucial purpose: to cause a stir. With his debut song, “Time and Money,” singer-songwriter Tanner Lee Gray muses on transactional relationships, platonic and otherwise, and his epiphany regarding someone in his own life. “She said, ‘I got time, if you got the money,'” he sings. He funnels in a realization “that a lot of people view quality time as a transaction rather than a relationship,” he says about the song. The weighty lyrics stand in stark contrast to the chipper arrangement and production. But there remains a somber tone bubbling just below the surface.
“Time and Money” anchors Gray’s debut EP, Man of Leisure, expected later this year.
