The cover art for Tara Craig‘s forthcoming EP, I’ve Been Looking for You, shows a crackling, roaring campfire in the desert. A group of people can be seen as faint, ghost-like figures in the background. It’s right after dusk. The sun has grown cold in the sky and vanished over the horizon. All that’s left is the sweet language of Craig’s lyricism. That’s the earth-quaking feeling of listening to her new EP, a bare-bones six-piece that aims for visceral, electric emotion that we feel even during life’s mundane, unextraordinary moments.
“Hiding” emerges as particularly stunning. Craig tinkers with luminescent piano keys, allowing her voice to guide the musical ship. “No, you stand by me, and the night is so long / My fears run deep, and I’m haunted by my dreams,” she sings. “And I’m losing sleep.” Her words fall like dead rose petals. The hollowness aching in her chest now tumbles upon the hardwood floor. It crashes hard. And that’s just the way of Craig’s new music.
“The Future” chimes with a similar emotional rattle. “Maybe I’ll grow more hair on my chin than my hand / If that were to happen,” she ponders, “would you still love me then? / Maybe I’ll forget you were ever my wife…” Later, “Hey, Mercy” and “Off the Ground” unpack the sharpness only an acoustic guitar can wield. It’s within that raw framework that Tara Craig bulldozes you with her plainspoken lyrics that are like sticky notes left around the house.
