“I’m arresting him with promises I will never keep,” Jena Malone sighs into her static microphone. Her voice warbles like the bass throbbing out of the speakers. “You’ve Been on My Mind” laps sonic waves, rhythmic and entrancing, as she considers untamed desires and what the truth could be. In using an electronic filter, Malone almost distances herself from her musings. She wrestles with their meaning but attempts to close that chapter. The lyric video is appropriately scrapbook-y, with photos and cartoon cutouts slathered in images to hammer home her swirling mental state. Her clarity doesn’t come without consequences. She’s willing to take that risk.
