Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.

“Every nightmare is manmade,” up and coming duo WESLEE charge with their new single, juggling the trickery of the mind, which can make you feel and see things that aren’t really there, with grounded reality. “Though it might be scary, you’ll be fine,” they later promise, enveloping you with warm synths, a tender embrace and a sleek cheek pucker. “Sweat Dreams,” a suitably satisfying moniker, boils over with a shiny, rave-ready groove for days, injecting the listener with literal chills and an escapist mentality. You can’t run away from your problems, but you can get lost in the music for a couple minutes.

“These demons, I can’t see / Just my conscious way down deep / And I know I’ll be alright,” Emma DD croons, bending her voice in true TLC fashion, configuring up her flighty attitude. The bass jars. The beat drops. The melody catches wind and soars. Along with producer Josh Grant, the dazed electronic duo are pumping on all cylinders these days, as “Sweat Dreams,” a goose-bump-inducing, R&B-transposed bop, follows a sequence of impressive singles, including the lullaby-like “Bathwater.” Their latest sizzling piece serves to sample their impending debut EP, F-9, out June 8 on AWAL.

Having met while both were pounding the pavement of New York City, the chemistry was swift. It was 2014 and Emma DD had just relocated from the foggy city of London to pursue her career. In their first sessions, their debut single “Gassed” was born and bred out of a need to create. Other such concoctions as “Boys Like You” and “Tongue Tied” soon followed, cementing their strong knack for searing melodies and lyrics which are as universal as they are hauntingly intimate. Their style is mainstream; but their funk is indie. And we’re totally here for it.
