Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

With all the talk about genres and label makers, music can suffer and feel forever trapped in boxes that’ll only collect dust. It can drive you crazy to see social feeds flooded with “that’s not [insert preferred genre here].” Landing somewhere and no where between glossy mainstream pop and folk music and piano-pop, arriving quartet Whatever We Are inhabit everything and nothing at the same time. Armed with their debut single “Limbo,” they not only draw the listener into a sonic force field but they bust down conventions and expectations. “Don’t know where I’m going,” they shrug their shoulders to a carefully-laid melodic blanket, lush and textured. Acoustic guitar and the soft trickle of ivories keep it all glued together, but synths and ’80s backbeats soon skip across the surface like casting a handful of stones upon a tranquil pond. They won’t be stuck in limbo for long; superstardom is in the fortunes. Make no mistake.
