Premiere: Kicking Sunrise documents marriage proposal with new song & video ‘Rest of My Life’

Indie-pop band use new video to document band member Joe Murphy’s marriage proposal to his girlfriend.

You have to hold onto the people you love like your life depends on it. Because it does. The friends, family, and even acquaintances colorize your life like confetti — without those vital connections, life just wouldn’t be worth living. Singer-songwriter Joe Murphy, one-half of pop duo Kicking Sunrise (with Mark Altamuro), out of southern New Jersey, dedicates a new song called “Rest of My Life” to his girlfriend (and now-fiancé). “You steal every eye at the party / You like a good spice when you’re drinking rum,” sings Murphy over sun-bleached guitar, shimmering and cutting in waves. “You mix up the nice with the naughty / And I think I found the one.”

The accompanying visual, premiering today, serves as living record of Murphy’s marriage proposal. Heading out to Sunset Beach, she thinks she’s helping “capture footage for my new project,” the musician shares in the clip intro. But she soon realizes it’ll be a day she remembers for the rest of her life (pun totally intended). “This song will be a part of my love story for the ‘rest of my life,'” Murphy tells B-Sides & Badlands. “We’ll look back at this video and be able to reconnect with how much this moment meant to us and the unconditional love we have for each other. This is something we’ll have for years to come and hopefully share with our grandchildren someday.”

The clip reads as a documentary of sorts, as Murphy chronicles every little detail — from getting ready in the morning to the car drive and a serene, leisurely walk along sandy beaches. “Give me one good reason why / I shouldn’t love you for the rest of my life,” sings Murphy, even pulling the listener closer for the big moment. The proposal arrives just as production fades away, only a lone guitar soundtracking the emotional punch.

(Spoiler alert: she said yes.)

Kicking Sunrise first splashed onto the scene with 2015’s Here’s to the Sunrise. “Rest of My Life” follows several singles, including 2019’s “Underneath” and “Reaching Out.”
