Struggling with mental health is like spiraling down the drain. You cling to yourself, even if yourself is the culprit dragging you down. With her new dark-pop song “Back to Hell,” Liv Hanna documents the feeling of isolation that comes with the territory. She finds herself crumbling and vanishing into a dark, icky underworld, as she equates mental illness to a personal hellish landscape. “No one seems to understand what happens to me when I spend too much time sitting in my head,” she sings. “I call myself up on the phone / Tell myself that I’m the only one who’s going back to hell.” Her vulnerable words are enough to pierce the heart. Everyone either knows someone struggling or finds themselves suffering. It’s a terrible state of existence, and “Back to Hell” captures the pain in profound detail.
